Our new collaboration with Teesside University

We are delighted to announce our new collaboration with Teesside University, which brings communication skills to the fore.

Here’s the full press release.

Oakley Coaching are an established coaching and mentoring consultancy, specialising in supporting healthcare practitioners to develop and improve their communications skills. Run by wife and wife team, Rhiannon and Philippa Oakley, they are pleased to announce a new collaboration with Teesside University, delivering a lecture series on advanced communication skills to undergraduate students.

Qualified Chiropractor and coach Philippa comments, ‘UK Chiropractors are statutorily regulated by the General Chiropractic Council, who have recently announced updated new Continued Professional Development (CPD) guidelines for the 2021/2022 CPD year. For the first time, Chiropractors are now required to reflect upon how their communication skills can enable us to provide a safe and effective service for their patients.”

Director and Coach Rhiannon comments, ‘Teesside University have developed an exciting curriculum which integrates core communication skills throughout their course. We are pleased to be working with the University to deliver advanced training for their students which will equip them with lifelong skills in person-centred care.”

Effective communication is considered the hallmark of good practice and patient care…

… and poor communication is often cited as a cause for complaints against healthcare practitioners. Both the NHS and private practitioners alike have therefore recognised the importance of formalising their communication skills training to prevent complaints and poor outcomes from care. Integrating these skills into an undergraduate programme will ensure graduating clinicians are able to build strong therapeutic alliances with their practitioners from their first days in practice.

Daniel Moore, Chiropractic Course Leader at Teesside University comments, It is really important to us at Teesside University to involve the profession in our teaching programme. It is also important to us that any element of the profession we work with is fundamentally underpinned with evidence and a focus on patient-centred care. This collaboration with Oakley Coaching ticks both of those boxes and really adds value to what we deliver through the course, specifically around our student’s soft skills development.”
